BARRIE — Military personnel with Canadian Forces Base Borden have been busy over the past week setting up a camp for what’s being called ‘Operation Laser,” a site that can accommodate hundreds of people in an emergency. Staff have relocated a temporary camp from CFB Kingston to CFB Borden to exercise their ability to rapidly assemble a makeshift camp with the capability of temporarily housing people in a pandemic setting.
Still, this time it’s different because of the pandemic. The camp has everything it needs to be self- contained, including a field kitchen, electricity and internet. To be clear, this is not a field hospital. Still, the accommodations could be used in any number of scenarios from a community evacuation in a forest fire to temporarily housing a large group of Canadians returning to the country. The Canadian Military has already been called on to assist domestically during the pandemic in long term care homes in Ontario and Quebec.
The Museum is now open, guaranteeing new safety measures and offering lots of free summer fun. More tickets will be available next Monday for the week that follows. Dismiss message.
Personal Travel Fare offered to members of the Canadian Armed Forces, veterans, and National Defence civilian personnel.
In some cases, the data collected involved basic information about the long-term care facilities. The team was provided specific terms to search for and all of the data gathered by the PiT team was publicly available, the Canadian Forces said. Various military sources contacted this newspaper to raise concerns about the team, warning that its operations could be seen as unethical and bordered on illegal. The Canadian Forces later provided some examples of unclassified PiT reports to this newspaper.
There is growing concern in some military quarters about efforts to expand such data-mining initiatives involving the public as well as information operations techniques to push government messages to Canadians. This newspaper revealed Monday that the Canadian Forces planned what some military insiders described as a propaganda campaign aimed at heading off civil disobedience by the public during the coronavirus pandemic.
Conrad Mialkowski, who had PiT assigned to his headquarters during the Canadian Forces pandemic response, said the team did not break any laws or violate military regulations. Such information helps inform the Canadian military about the situation they would be operating in during the pandemic, said Mialkowski, commander of Joint Task Force Central.
